exhausted. i think i'll go take a nap in the department soon...

i want to get a mini laptop to bring to school; then i wouldn't
need to wear a groove into my shoulder carrying my big, heavy
laptop around. the dell mini is $279 and weighs 2.3 lbs - eric
had one in class last night and i was instantly envious. do
you have one? is it good?

They're very good. You can get them with solid state hard drives or regular spinny ones, with built-in 3g networking so you've got internet everywhere (although that's kinda pricey per-month), and the best part is you can make them run MacOS perfectly with minimal effort:

My only problem with them is that I have big hands.

i probably wldn't get the internet thing cause i just use wireless on campus & at home & don't really go anywhere else. i bring my laptop to school every day i'm here and it would be wonderful if i had one that was smaller & weighed less; maybe i'd actually feel like bringing some library books home.

Ed has an MSI Wind. He loves it. He even wiped the hard drive and installed OS X. Several of our friends also have them and have done the same thing. They come in pink!

I have an Eee mini laptop, which C picked up for a little under $300. I like it, though it's a bit slow.

I justified the Kindle because of comps this summer. Maybe it's sort of a weak justification... but it does seem like it'll be useful for that.

I do not trust those small computers--they seem too easily broken.

Also, I've had a Dell for five years and I can say with complete confidence that I will NEVER EVER buy another Dell. Too many problems, most of which weren't even my fault. They're not manufactured well, they have programming problems. I did have a fair amount of physical damage over five years, and one good thing about Dell is that they have pretty good insurance. If you do get a Dell--GET INSURANCE!

i have a dell now and had a dell desktop before... it isn't the best but they are fairly cheap :/ 5 years seems like a long time! i guess i had my first computer from like 1997-2002 or so, then i had a hand me down from my brother until 2005, then i had a dell and now this laptop, which i got about a year and a half ago.

My dad has had Dell desktops before. I've only ever had a Dell laptop, which I've had a lot of problems with and now it runs ridiculously slow. I'm getting a new computer in June, so I shouldn't complain too much.

The one good thing about Dell, I think, is they have pretty decent customer service, which I used a lot in the past.

I guess any computer you move around is bound to get more damaged than one that stays in relatively the same spot for a few years.

you just missed the cheap-o price for an eeepc on woot.com
they had a 900a for $150 something.
it would have been a bit pokey, but the low price might have made up for it.
if you're patient, another round of those type of machine should come up.

remember you can probably get a discount through school too. Pretty tempting to me-- I figure I could have my macbook at home but not have to lug it everywhere...

I have a Dell mini and I'm really happy with it. I got the cheapest one with only 8GB of memory, but I don't use it for much else other than getting online and writing, so I'm fine with that. It runs a lot faster than I expected it would. And it's tiny; I can just stick it in my purse and take it everywhere. I'd reccommend it!
